President’s Message

Aloha Kams' Society Members,

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer. We had several events that took place in the past few months. Mahalo to Mona McNamara for organizing our participation.

First was our annual picnic. Twenty-five of our members joined the United Chinese Society and other societies again this year. Charging $5 per person, UCS prepared a lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, and chips. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Honolulu donated yummy Hokkaido Chiffon Cake from JJ’s Bakery. Another society, Kung Sheong Doo, made refreshing coke and root beer floats for attendees. Mona brought drinks and snacks for us to enjoy. Games were organized and many door prizes were given. Thank you to UCS President Leonard Kam and his committee for hosting this fun activity.

Our planned visit to Palolo Chinese Home had to be canceled as Palolo was not ready to open for groups to visit. They were still limiting contact from visitors and even between residents. So Mona and I stopped by to give CEO Darlene Nakayama our donation of $500, a fruit basket, and a jar of almond cookies on behalf of the Kams’ Society.

Many thanks to Margaret and Felipe Manangan for providing the space for the Dragon Boat construction crew. Please see Mona McNamara’s report for more details of the events.

Remember to RSVP to Paulette (Poppy) Ing for the General Membership Meeting and send in your reservation for the Christmas Installation Party. A Night in Chinatown parade is again being planned. This will be on January 14, 2023. Sign up sheets will be at the GMM and Christmas party or RSVP to Poppy if you are interested in participating. Please include names of participants, and if they do no have a Kams’ T-shirt, their size and preferred style of polo or scoop neck.

Thank you,

Colleen Lee

Dragon Boat Festival in the Park

Kams’ Society participated in this festival and made their own cardboard dragon boat. This event took place in historical Aala Park near downtown Chinatown on July 30, 2022 at 8A on a beautiful Saturday morning. It was a family event with competitive dragon boat races, Lion dances, entertainment, games and food trucks.

19 of our members came out to watch, support and participate in the festivities. Our hats off to the two Five Man Teams that paddled their way across

Aala Park for us in the races with the fierce Red Dragon Boat designed and constructed by our own Dragon Boat Makers: Jeff Kam, Ralph Kam, Felipe Manangan, Margaret Manangan and Wes Mow. One team was the McNamara Ohana and Daniel Kam, the other team was Sean McNamara, Daniel Kam, Ralph Kam, Felipe Manangan and Wes Mow.

Our dragon boat was assembled at the park at 7a.m. by our members to prepare for the Opening Ceremony and races that started at 9 a.m. Our President Colleen Lee bought Char Siu Bao from Sing Cheong Yuan on Maunakea Street in Chinatown for our breakfast, members were also treated to lunch from the food trucks, Da Plate 808 and El Chino Loco. A big mahalo to the Manangan Family for supplying us with a tent and bottled water. We hope that our next Dragon Boat Race will bring more members out to participate and have fun!

Fall Banquet

Our 93rd Annual Banquet was held on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at Jade Dynasty Seafood Restaurant at Ala Moana Shopping Center. It was nice to see everyone once again, 17 tables were purchased by Kams’ Society Members. This banquet was a good indication that more members and their families are once again out and about. We had a plethora of donations this year from bottles of wine, to gift baskets, cash donations for door prizes and gift cards as well. The food was good and many items on the menu were well received like the Salt and Pepper Tofu Cubes with Puff Rice and the Sweet Sour Fish to name a few. The Lotus Seed Mooncakes were also given as dessert to everyone. Mahalo to everyone that came to our Fall Banquet as we give thanks and celebrate a time of reunion with friends and family.
